Questions
Short answers to what people ask before, during and after a website.
A new website
How do I start?
Book a short call or answer a few questions in the planner. We talk about your business, then you get a written proposal and a timeline.
Plan your projectHow much does a website cost?
It depends on what the site needs to do. A focused site for a small business is often more affordable than people expect, while shops and bookings take more work. I scope what you need and what you would like, then quote a fixed price in writing. Smaller projects can be paid off over a few months, interest free.
How long does it take to build a website?
A smaller site is usually live in four to six weeks. Bigger sites and shops get their own timeline in the proposal.
Will my website show up on Google?
Nobody can honestly promise a ranking. What I can do is build it to be found: fast pages, clean structure, Search Console and your Google Business Profile set up properly.
I have no time to write my website. Can you help?
Yes. A short conversation is usually enough for me to write a first draft that sounds like you, and I can take the photographs too.
Will my website bring in enquiries, or just look good?
It is planned around what your clients search for and what makes them get in touch. After launch, real search data shows what to improve.
Can you build an online shop?
Yes. Products, vouchers or bookings, with secure checkout through a South African payment provider.
Your current website
Can you redesign my existing website?
Yes. I keep what works, move your content across and point your old links to the new pages.
Can you just fix or update my WordPress site?
Yes. A quick change, an update or something that broke, charged by the hour, with nothing to sign up for.
Ask about WordPress helpWebsites made with AI
I made a website concept with AI. Can you take it further?
Yes, bring it along. It makes a good brief. I turn it into a properly built site that is secure, quick, set up for search and looked after.
What do AI built websites usually get wrong?
Often the words sound like everyone else's, the images look generic and details drift from page to page. Security, search setup, privacy and upkeep tend to be left out.
Do you use AI?
Yes, as a tool, the way most developers now do. I decide what gets built and how, and I review and test everything before it goes live.
WordPress, Wix and the alternatives
Why not WordPress?
WordPress leans on plugins, and plugins are where almost all of its reported security holes are found. My sites are built as ready made pages with no plugins and no database behind them, which leaves far fewer ways in. Nothing online is unbreakable, so they are still monitored and kept up to date.
What is a Jamstack website?
A site built ahead of time into ready made pages and served from a global network close to your visitors. Forms, payments and bookings run through separate services that handle just that job.
Why not Wix or Squarespace?
They are quick to start, but you are renting. You cannot take the site to another host as it is, you have less control over speed and search details, and the platform keeps itself running without anyone looking after your site for you.
Can you connect my other systems?
Yes. Booking systems, CRMs, payment providers, email marketing and most tools with an API.
Looking after your website
Why pay someone to look after my website?
The web keeps moving. Updates, security fixes, monitoring and search tuning are a job of their own. It is my job, so it does not have to be yours.
What happens when I need a small change?
You send it straight to me by email or WhatsApp. Waiting three months for a phone number to change is madness, and there is no queue of account managers here to cause it.
Will I be left on my own after launch?
No. Every site runs on the Flight Plan, so the person who built it keeps looking after it.
What happens if my site goes down?
Monitoring alerts me, and I get to it as quickly as I can.
Can I make changes myself?
Send me the change and it is done. For sites that change often, I can add a simple editor.
Is my website POPIA compliant?
Forms, privacy policy and cookie notice are built with POPIA in mind on every site. How your business handles the information afterwards matters too, and I can point you in the right direction.
Ownership and leaving
Who owns my website?
Your domain, words, photographs and data are yours. Once paid, you have a permanent licence to the finished website. The source code behind it stays with Takeflight unless you buy it.
What if I want to move to someone else?
Once all fees are paid, you take the complete working website, your content and your data with you at no charge, and I help point your domain to the new host. Contact forms and other features that run on my systems need replacing by your new provider, and I tell them exactly which.
What happens if Takeflight stops trading?
The source code of your website is released to you free of charge. It is written into the agreement.
Working together
Do you work outside Somerset West and Cape Town?
Yes. I work with businesses across South Africa and abroad, mostly over email and video calls.
Do you work in Afrikaans?
Ja. I work in English and Afrikaans.
